May 2nd, 2024, we marked a significant achievement in our journey towards a zero-waste future for Moratuwa Municipal Council area. The SEVANATHA project team, in collaboration with Moratuwa Municipal Council and the support of Clean Cities and Blue Ocean (CCBO) from USAID, conducted a successful ceremony for the official handover of machinery, equipment, and materials essential for our implementation of the 3R action plan in Moratuwa.
Ms. Nilanka Wijenayake, the Country Director of CCBO program and USAID, along with Mr. U.G Ekanayake, the Solid Waste Management Specialist of CCBO, graced the occasion, highlighting the global importance of our local efforts. Mr. Ranjith Samarasinghe, President of SEVANATHA Urban Resource Centre, joined hands with our team to ensure a seamless transition of these vital resources.
Over the past two years, our partnership has been dedicated to formulating and implementing strategies that empower the community and stakeholders towards sustainable waste management. Through education, facilitation, and awareness campaigns, we aim to reduce plastic waste and promote responsible waste disposal practices.
The ceremony, hosted by Chief Public Health Inspector Mr. Yasantha Ruwansiri of Moratuwa MMC, was a testament to our collective dedication. It began with a warm welcome and insightful introduction by Municipal Secretary Mr. M. K. D. T. Munasinghe and the project manager Mr. Dilan Kumara of SEVANATHA. Their presentations shed light on the tangible impact of our efforts and garnered admiration from all stakeholders present.
Senior Technical Advisor Mr. K. A. Jayarathne outlined the future trajectories of our 3R Action Plan, emphasizing our commitment and collaboration with Moratuwa Municipal Council through specialized sub-committee process to implement the 3R action plan.
We were honored to hear from esteemed guests like Ms. Nilanka Wijenayake, who shared CCBO’s perspective and applauded the tireless efforts of everyone involved. Municipal Commissioner Ms. Manoja S. Pathirana’s remarks highlighted the ceremony as a pivotal moment in our waste management journey.
The highlight of the event was the formal handing over of machinery and materials to the Municipal Commissioner Ms. Manoja S. Pathirana, symbolizing our commitment to implement the strategies effectively.
