Proposing Passive Cooling Solutions for Urban Poor Households in Colombo
Proposing Passive Cooling Solutions for Urban Poor Households in Colombo
Current Progress
After conducting the basic analysis, SEVANATHA has successfully identified appropriate passive cooling solutions tailored to the structural and environmental conditions of the selected houses. These solutions were developed through a community participatory approach, ensuring that local knowledge and preferences are integrated into the decision-making process. The proposed interventions are then evaluated by a technical team for its feasibility and effectiveness. Additionally, field visits were carried out with the involvement of technical team members to assess on-site conditions and ensure the practical applicability of the solutions. This participatory process contributed significantly to develop climate-responsive and community-driven solutions to manage the indoor heating conditions of the selected houses.
Future Activities
SEVANATHA plans to implement the proposed passive cooling solutions with technical and financial support from its partners, while providing training to community members to contribute to these solutions. As a pilot project, it aims to enable other households to adopt suitable methods based on their preferences through the training provided. SEVANATHA also intends to monitor indoor temperature during post-implementation period to evaluate the impact of the intervention. Furthermore, a guidebook will be developed, documenting appropriate cooling solutions for urban poor housing, with the aim of sharing this knowledge with local and regional partners.
The SEVANATHA’s project team has carefully tailored cooling solutions to suit the unique conditions of the identified households through a participatory mobilization process. A technical assessment was conducted, evaluating the proposed strategies, exploring improvements, and considering alternative solutions. Special attention was paid to ensuring compatibility and adaptability with the existing structure and environmental contexts of selected houses.
SEVANATHA extends its heartfelt appreciation to Architect Vipula Wellege, Engineer Dhammika Gunawardena, and Procurement Specialist Ranjan Perera, and President SEVANATHA for their invaluable contribution to the success of this initiative. Their expertise and dedication are instrumental in bringing innovative and sustainable cooling solutions to those who need them most.
