A Regional Approach to Passive Cooling Solutions for Urban Poor Households in Asia - A Case Study in the City of Colombo
Brief Introduction to the Project:
This project was initiated by Climate Works Foundation under its Clean Cooling Collaborative to support ACHR Network Countries in Asia to explore alternatives to mitigate adverse effects of climate and introduce thermally efficient designs for affordable housing. It is a two-year project started from January 2024.
The Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR) has selected eight (08) countries in Asia including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippine, Sri Lanka, and Thailand to implement this project through local partners in each country. In Sri Lanka, the project is implemented by SEVANATHA URC in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The Project Location:
The Project is implemented in identified low- income settlements in the city of Colombo. It has developed appropriate selection criteria to select the settlements and then the houses for detailed study.

a. Stakeholder Mapping and Consultation
b. Documentation of the current conditions of selected housing units by typology, design, construction materials and internal arrangements etc.
c. Monitoring / Measuring of the indoor temperature for about 02 months period.
d. Data entry and analysis
e. Community Consultation to discuss on the key issues related to internal heating, and mitigating measures
f. Stakeholder Consultation on the findings and solutions
g. Propose appropriate passive cooling solutions to solve the problem of internal heating
h. Share the experiences with regional partners through the ACHR network
Current Progress:
SEVANATHA URC has already made significant progress in implementation of the key activities of the pilot project. It has selected the settlements and houses, conducted community consultations, measured the internal heating for two months period, documented the design / construction aspects of selected houses and data entering and analysis etc.
